The city of Marble Falls first got its name as early as 1817, when travelers used the area’s large natural waterfalls as a landmark on their journeys. Referred to as the ‘great falls’ or ‘marble falls’, the structure was actually three distinct formations, created by a large shelf of limestone that ran diagonally across the Colorado River. The city’s official founder, General Adam R. Johnson, first surveyed the area in 1854. In awe of the falls, Johnson visualized building a great manufacturing city powered by the rumbling Colorado River. Johnson followed through with his dream, facilitating the construction of a railroad to nearby Granite Mountain in 1884, and then plotting the town site and selling lots, beginning July 12, 1887. Within ten years, the town grew to a population of 1,800 and eventually became an incorporated town in 1907.
